Baby Goat's First Bath!
(the old fashioned way)
This multi-tasking mama is one of the goats you donated last summer to Khairabad Village. She and her sista goats are now giving birth! The first kid from each family is given to another village family via the Shindad Women's Social Foundation. The Foundation is monitoring success of the project and teaching new families how to care for the goats as the project grows. As these mamas continue to reproduce , the families have milk, yogurt, cheese, meat, and income. And they can turn around and help someone else.
Now 30 Khairabad families (and counting!) have a better life. Scroll down for more on Khairabad and click over to the Shorab page to see our 2nd village full of goats!
We won't stop there - Click here to give goats to a family today.

Fazle Ahmed Expresses Gratitude
for Goats Provided for his Village |
A partial translation of video transcript:
"Thank you so much to everyone, especially the Karadah Project. First, I want to begin with my greetings and appreciation for helping us. This project helped many of us, those that were not given their rights, most importantly the women. This helped many of the women to grow and learn something valuable. This project was successful, especially for women. Through this project many women have been involved economically and they have been given a peaceful environment. These women are the future of our country. Through their help we will have educated and motivated children. We request that every organization not give up on us, and that they continue helping and investing our future. One of the problems that have been faced is that this area is very mountainous, and this is the reason it’s called Kohistani which meaning mountainous. There are various responsibilities, and working on carpets helps many women to help their families. We request that this goat project continue and grow so that our future can grow." - Fazle Ahmad |
A (really fun pictorial) Report of
Goats in Khairabad
The women of Khairabad Village, Afghanistan are having phenomenal success with their goats. They prepared during the 2013 winter by building feeding troughs and receiving and assembling the milk processing equipment. (We hope that unit came with instructions because those are a lot of small parts!)
Thanks to your donations and our relationship with the Shindad Women Social Foundation, 15 families have received their 2 goats each and are now milking! Soon they'll have kids and another generation of Goats for Afghanistan will be in the works. See the photos below of the good you are doing.

Winter Preparation for Goats
Spring Arrival & Milking
Goats for Afghan Villages
Goats are amazing. When you have goats, you have milk, yoghurt, cheese, and amazingly, more goats! When we were approached by the Shindad Women Social Foundation (SWSF) about providing goats to villagers in Khairabad, Afghanistan we were intrigued. SWSF needed funds to purchase 2 goats each for 15 women (vaccinations, training, feed, milking pan and processing equipment all included). We live by three principles around here and their project fit all three.
- Sustainability – Each family receiving two goats is required to give the first offspring to another family. Yep, two goats in love have baby goats twice a year. Each family returns the first offspring to the central herd to be given to another family. That family breeds their goats and returns the first offspring and so forth. See, you can’t stop goats from falling in love, so the goats sustain their own project. Brilliant.
- Innovation – This project is patterned after Heifer International and SWSF has been successful with similar projects. Its innovation lies in that we make a one-time investment and the goats keep on giving. This agricultural project will produce additional resources exponentially for other families in the village.
- Growth – Did we mention baby goats? And don’t forget, the products each family will make from their goat milk will provide income when sold at market and nutritional support for their own kids. (And grown-ups, too.)
Your response to this project has been phenomenal. Frankly, we’re humbled that you would give so generously. We’re tracking the goat’s progress carefully so we can report back to you on our success, but those initial 15 families are already reaping the benefit of your good will.
The Khairabad Village venture is off to a great start. You’re awesome. So awesome that we are near beginning this same project in a second village. To give goats to an Afghan village, click here.
